This letter-writing club is designed to encourage and build each other up as we grow in the gospel worldwide. Connect with a sister in Christ or sign up to receive study notes from us directly.

I walked into the kitchen to see my oldest son, sitting at the table with a blue pen in his hand.

I asked him “what are you up to, bud?” He replied “I’m just reading my Bible.”

I was absolutely overjoyed to see him wanting to do that himself. So I asked (as calmly as I could) “what are you marking in blue?”

“Just the bits I think are important” he says.

It hit me in that moment, how much he watches. How much he picks up. Whether that’s at home. Or watching the teenagers who bring their Bibles to church. Or watching the baptisms we’ve had recently and hearing others commit their lives to Jesus. It reminded me of this quote:

“Out of 100 men, one will read the Bible; the other 99 will read the Christian.” (I think it’s DL Moody but I’m not super sure)

And it had me thinking, imagine that in being Christ in our coming and going, in our living and breathing. Imagine that in doing that, others are drawn to love and know Him too?

Starting with my own children.

Ok. I’ll have to find the post button through the blur because I’m a teary mother mess over here.

Dearest John,

I can see why you were the disciple that Jesus loved. You have taken it all in, highlighted the moments that mattered. You have so beautifully grabbed our attention and our hearts.

Chapter 17 will always sit as something special for me. To be able to read the actual words Jesus prayed on my behalf blows my mind. I’m still spinning about that.

Thank you for being there. For seeing with your own eyes. Thank you for writing these things down so that I can see Jesus for myself. That I can believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and by believing have life in his name.

I can’t wait to meet you. I can imagine you’d be a brilliant person to sit and chat over a cuppa with. I can imagine we would sit and chat for hours.

John 21.

The disciples are back where they started. Fishing in the night. They catch absolutely nothing.

As day breaks, Jesus appears (already fixing breakfast on the shore) and suddenly they catch 153 fish (a super specific number, there are lots of theories about that).

Impulsive Peter plunges into the water and shows John he might not be a very fast runner but he’s a pretty good swimmer 😉

Peter finds himself beside another charcoal fire (feel familiar?) and again he’s asked the same question 3 times. But this time, his answers show that he is willing to love and follow Christ.

Instead of berating or disowning Peter, Jesus gives him the mission to teach and care for the church.

After giving him this mission, Jesus predicts Peter’s own execution. Sit in that for a minute. Imagine being told you’re going to die for this? Yet, Peter follows faithfully.

Again, what might look like a failed plan, is actually the plan all along.

Even if we fail, Jesus forgives, restores and uses us to teach others about him.

We don’t follow for a comfy, happy or picture perfect life but because Jesus is Lord and we believe this with our whole heart.

As we sit in the quiet. As we process the death of Jesus and await the triumph of his resurrection, I was reminded of these words in John 14. They connected in my brain to the words of Paul in Philippians 4.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:4-9)

I have the feeling this might be the reminder you need right now.

Jesus didn’t say “I am finished.” He declared the work the Father gave Him is “accomplished”.

Flick back over John and look for all the times Jesus says he has come to “finish” or “accomplish” the work of the Father. From the well in John 4:34 to His prayer in John 17:4, every step of His life was building up to the cross.

“Jesus’ work was done… this is no cry of defeat… but the deliberate utterance of a clear consciousness that His work was finished, and all God’s purpose accomplished.” — D. A. Carson

Each moment on the cross was foretold, controlled, on purposed. Jesus ends his earthly ministry by announcing that his work here is done. It is finished.

Salvation is secured.

The cross wasn’t an accident. It was the climax of God’s plan, perfectly accomplished.

John 18 keeps flicking between Jesus and Peter. At first, it kind of looks like Jesus has given up.

But if you slow down and look closely, you’ll notice he’s the one completely in control.

He steps forward. Asks the questions. Says “I Am”and the soldiers literally fall over.

He’s not being taken. He’s offering Himself.

Then John swings us back to Peter. Who is literally swinging a sword. Trying desperately to take control of the situation. In the courtyard, when he’s asked who he is, he answers “I am not”.

Jesus says “I Am”
Peter says “I am not”

John is highlighting that while we can’t, Jesus can. Where we fail, Jesus steps in. When we have no control, Jesus has complete authority. When we can’t save ourselves, he is prepared to lay down his life.

When it’s tempting to swing that sword and try take control, my prayer is that I trust the one who holds all authority, “I Am”.

Even when it looks to me like the plan is failing.

“For I know the plans I have for you” should maybe be followed by the words: “and they’re never what you think they’ll be”.

I said no more than 10 years living in Sweden. 10 years later is today.

Instead of moving away, we are packing up our apartment and becoming more permanent in Sweden.

As I look back. There has been so much hard followed by so much grace and love. I am thankful for all the moments, brutal and beautiful. Through them I have grown and changed and become wildly more reliant on the one who made me.

Wow Sweden. Who would’ve thought I’d still be here? Not me. I didn’t.

It blows my MIND that I can actually read words on a page showing that Jesus prays to the Father about ME.

Can we all just pause for a second.

Jesus prays for us in this moment. What? That’s insane that I can read those words.

I recently shared about an idea I have had.
A project.
To write handwritten letters of encouragement to another Christian following this account.

It stemmed from these passages in John. To remain. Abide. We are the branches. The church. We are one in Him.

As I sat in this passage last week it hit me like a rocket “we are one as the Father and Son are one” whaaaaaaat? That is incredible.

So I thought about how we can build on that. The idea of being ONE.

HOSAAAAAAAAANAAAAAA!!!!!

Each day this week my family will sit down together and “open” a bag. These bags have a short Bible verse on the front that my oldest reads for us.

Because he’s been doing this for a few years now, he leads this time together.

We answer the question inside, chat together and (for the oldest) we read the passage in its slightly wider context.

Today it was Matthew 21:1-11. Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

For my youngest, he ended tonight saying “Jesus is king!” And wore this paper crown on his head.

My prayer is that as we teach them God’s Word, letting it plant deep in their hearts, that they would be readily equipped to make their own decision about what they think because we gave them the tools, knowledge and showered them in our prayers. It’s not me that gets to decide, but golly I will do all in my power to make sure they have all they need.

Easter is heavy but it’s beautiful. It’s emotional and it’s a lot. It’s my favourite time of the year because it is the very reason I live.

I will try and share the bits and pieces I have put together for my family this week. It really will be raw and unfiltered (like here, my son chose the darkest corner to sit and my husband sat in the kids ikea chair while the living room is an explosion of toys. That’s our Sunday arvo!)

They’re all about to go down.

This week is massive.

Obviously there’s nothing magical about this actual week. Nothing happens more now than it did last week. But this is a chance for us to really soak it in.
To walk the road.
To look at His face.
To sit and listen to the cries.
To marvel at what actually took place during those days.

This week I’m reading John 18-21 (the last chapters of the book). If you haven’t been able to follow the whole book, can I ask you to join me for just this week? 4 chapters. 7 days.

I would love you to walk this week with me.

Unlike the cozy Christmas cradle, Easter is a little harder to explain to our kidlets.

How do we explain the garden, the arrest, the brutal execution, the fear of the disciples, the mind-blowing empty tomb?

And yet. This moment is the most incredible, life-changing, earth-shattering moment in history. The week the world literally shook, the water literally flowed, and eternal life was made available to all of us. It has to be celebrated. We have to explain it!

So I made these 8 illustrations, from Palm Sunday to Easter morning, following Jesus as He walks through the week and brings us new life.

Unlike the cozy Christmas cradle, Easter is a little harder to explain to our kidlets.

How do we explain the garden, the arrest, the brutal execution, the fear of the disciples, the mind-blowing empty tomb?

And yet. This moment is the most incredible, life-changing, earth-shattering moment in history. The week the world literally shook, the water literally flowed, and eternal life was made available to all of us. It has to be celebrated. We have to explain it!

So I made these 8 illustrations, from Palm Sunday to Easter morning, following Jesus as He walks through the week and brings us new life.

This has been rolling around in my mind for a few days now. I’ve been chewing on it. Trying to figure out the best way to share it. Apparently, the second I walked in the door to work was that moment. Who would’ve guessed it. Not me.

A few of you have been asking what resources I use or where I go to find things like this.

For John I’ve been using:
- Notes from Word 121
- My Study Bible
- YouVersion notes from Biblica (#interpretation 1)
- Lectures and study notes by Tim Mackie (#interpretation 2)
- Dipping into bits by Richard Bauckham
- Picking the brains of people I trust and look up to as Bible scholars (mainly people in my family)

What’s something you’ve learned as you’ve peeled open John?

I’ll go first.

John LOVES the number 7.

Have you noticed the little time markers at the start of the Gospel of John?

John keeps saying things like:

“the next day…”
“the next day…”
“the next day…”

And if you follow them through, they lead you to the wedding at Cana on the seventh day.

That’s not an accident.

John started his gospel with the words “In the beginning” echoing the opening of the Book of Genesis. Now he gives us SEVEN DAYS.

It’s a hint that something new is beginning.

And what happens on that seventh day?

A wedding feast.

When the wine runs out, Jesus turns water into wine and not just any wine. The best wine is kept until last.

That detail matters.

Isaiah described God’s coming kingdom as a great feast with abundant, rich wine (see Isaiah 25).

So this moment at Cana is more than just saving a party from embarrassment.

John calls it the first SIGN.

A small glimpse of something much bigger.

The best wine kept until last quietly points forward to the end of Jesus’ ministry when his death and resurrection would open the way to the true feast of God’s kingdom.

Seven days.
A wedding.
New wine.

John is telling us from the very beginning:

IT’S HIM. HE’S HERE!

My mind is blown. Wait until I try to explain Jesus blowing minds at the Feast of Tabernacles in chapter 7 and 8. My brain is still digesting that one.

Maybe this doesn’t look super nice, but if you live in Sweden, you know exactly what this path means.

After months of darkness and gravel scattered roads, today I came home to a clean path. This small sign points to something massive. Winter is over. Spring is finally on its way (I could cry, I love this time of year so much!)

Did you notice when Jesus turned the water into wine at Cana, John didn’t call it a miracle? He called it a sign.

A sign never just points to itself.

Yes, Jesus saved a wedding from being super embarrassing. But that moment was so much more. It was pointing to who Jesus is, and the new life, new covenant, new kingdom he was bringing (check for connections in Amos 9:13 and Isaiah 25:6-9).

The miracle was a sign. More than just a nice drink, to a Jewish mind, loads of wine meant the Messiah and the kingdom of God is here.

Next time you read John, look for the signs. Once you start, you see them scattered everywhere. They are all pointing us directly to Jesus.

What’s that about?

John writes: “In him was life, and that life was the light of men.” (John 1:4)

In this gospel, light and life always go together.

Light = the life of God breaking into the darkness of the world.

Jesus brings new creation light (did you notice that “creation” reference? “In the beginning…”). Wherever people meet Him, the darkness is exposed and the possibility of new life begins.

John weaves this theme throughout his gospel.

Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night when he doesn’t yet understand.

All through the book people are either moving toward the light or stepping back into the darkness.

And John asks the reader the same question:

Will you step into the light or remain in the darkness?

Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

As we read John together, watch for this theme. Once you see it, it’s everywhere.

Because John writes like an artistic genius. He would’ve made an incredible director of indie arthouse films. He hides these little Easter eggs (hilarious. I know. Because we’re reading up to Easter) for us to find.

He writes in layers. Or like levels. You might read this for the very first time (level 1) and you will meet and see Jesus. Or read it for the 85th time (level bagillion, ok maybe that’s not a number) and follow the thread of “light and life” or “water” or “witness”. This book is designed so that you could read it for the rest of your life and KEEP finding things you didn’t see before.

I feel excited and a little overwhelmed if I’m honest.

Buckle in guys. Let’s jump into John.
